Worship through Action

As crises pile up threatening

to shatter heart and soul,

we are not helpless.

We can love and support our

friends, neighbors, coworkers, volunteers,

classmates, and congregations.

As we knit ourselves together with love,

we can find ways to help –

physically, economically, emotionally, spiritually,

politically, personally, and mystically.

Rumi said,

“Let the beauty we love

be what we do.

There are a thousand ways to

kneel and kiss the ground.”

May we kneel on Creation’s sacred ground and

discern a thousand ways to

worship through action.

The Middle Way

Hate begets hate,

bring love.

Blame leads to revenge,

bring compassion

Rage triggers violence,

bring peace.

Fear motivates withdrawal,

bring calm.

Collapse leads to defeat,

bring healing.

Exhaustion robs engagement,

bring energy.

Lies foster confusion,

bring truth.

Cynicism creates nihilism,

bring hope.

Surrender permits dominance,

bring resolve.

Despair generates isolation,

bring community.

Hopelessness drives denial,

bring nature,

Detachment fosters unconsciousness,

bring awareness.

Negativity crushes inspiration,

bring the mystical Self.

We are never alone or defenseless.

The deepest source of our resistance

to tyranny and injustice

lies in our common humanity

and the mystical experience

of our divine nature.

Generate a force field

of love, empathy, and healing

to rein in the raging beast.

Love begets the strength to care.

Protect Democracy

Framers of our constitution

conceived democracy

to uphold the sacred value of every citizen.

Those with a lust for power and wealth

inevitably threaten this principle.

When democracy fails,

mystical consciousness awakens.

We feel the suffering of others

because in God we are the others.

That time has arrived.

As slaughter rages,

we incarnate God-as-Creation,

lock arms,

and defend Earth’s sacred ground

with the courage

of unconditional love.

Love in Desperate Circumstances

When hatred, horror, and cruelty

set the world ablaze,

the mystic knows society’s fires

simply mirror the narrative

of a few angry males,

like two drunks fighting outside a bar

over grievances long forgotten.

Humanity begs for another

kind of response.

Consider…

Walt Whitman,

acting from sacred perception,

devoted his mysticism to nursing Civil War soldiers

in hospitals and battlefields

all the while knowing he had no control over

the outcome of humanity’s latest nightmare.

Psychologist Victor Frankl,

imprisoned in a concentration camp,

with love and attention his only resources,

provided comfort and hope to others

by finding meaning in love.

Here’s my prayer…

May we merge

mystical consciousness with

God-as-Creation

and love

as Creation loves

by healing wounds with tender new growth.

May we offer

love-as-action

until the terrible cost of violence

brings people to their knees and

 humanity wakes up.

Apocalypse and Rebirth

We stand paralyzed before

a hard-barreling train

carrying the massive freight

of warfare and climate disasters,

polluted landscapes and human desperation.

Its impact – fierce, powerful, terrifying –

already disrupts our lives.

We tremble in the face of

multiplying catastrophes.

Perhaps a new vision will rise from

the marriage of mystical awakening

and Earth wisdom.

Listen:

The sacred world is already here,

divine and conscious.

Do you see it?

As humanity’s arrogance fails,

open your consciousness to the guidance

of Spirit, ancestors, and love.

Get ready to move

from heartbreak and loss

to the new work of Creation.

The Courage to Be

Democracy is burning.

What is the mystic’s response

to this metastasizing evil?

It begins again by

experiencing,

worshipping,

and

serving

God-as-Creation

to embody

its love, joy, and creativity.

Here we find

God as Reality,

 God as Love,

and God as our own being.

To confront fascism,

we also challenge our belief in death.

Once you realize

the World of Man is an illusion

with death its central archetype,

you will see through the present ugliness

into

the underlying fabric of divine life.

Your awakening to the sacred world

will ignite the courage to stand strong

against purveyors of hatred and death.

They can kill illusion,

they can kill our temporary incarnations,

but they can’t kill God.

They can’t kill our souls.

In these dire times,

we stand inside God,

animated by God,

lived by God,

to love Creation as our own being.

What should we do?

Wake up.

Fill ourselves with sacred weapons:

love, compassion, and joy.

Act.

Second Journeys

Gradually, as we age, we recognize

a second journey waits on the horizon,

a journey beyond this world.

To prepare, we reminisce, let go,

wrap up affairs and say goodbyes,

subtly at first, then more directly.

Sensing a sea change

we await the ship that will 

take us across the great waters.

Light filters through the veil of sky.

We smile, laugh, cry, and trust.

Dissolving into love once again,

we know it will be glorious.
